Baltimore County Jobs Supported by Stem Cell Research

"Economic Benefits of Maryland's Stem Cell Program already Apparent," a new study conducted by Sage Policy Group, Inc. for the Maryland Technology Development Corporation, found that the Maryland Stem Cell Research Fund supports 514 local jobs - with an average salary of $64,000 - and facilitates $71.3 million in business sales throughout the state.
The study found that the program's grants have created:
- 250 direct jobs with $21.8 million in labor income and $35.5 million in business sales
- 104 indirect jobs with $5.5 million in labor income and $14.9 million in business sales
- 160 induced jobs with $6.8 million in labor income and $20.9 million in business sales
Pittsburgh Finance Jobs Created by Increased Lending
One company's commitment to improve lending will create more Pittsburgh finance jobs and allow small businesses to hire more workers.
Columbus-based Huntington Bancshares Inc. recently announced that it will offer $4 billion in lending to small businesses in the Midwest during the next three years. About $360 million of that investment will go to small businesses in Pittsburgh, which could affect 2,500 companies.
Huntington is currently the eighth-largest bank by deposits and the fourth-largest Small Business Administrator lender in Pittsburgh. The company plans to add more than 12 business bankers in the city, more than doubling the current number.
Portland Construction Jobs through Stadium Renovations
The move of a local soccer team to the major league will help create Portland construction jobs.
The City of Portland recently announced that it has reached a final agreement with Peregrine Power, LLC to renovate PGE Park and upgrade the Portland Timbers to a Major League Soccer franchise. That move will help create local jobs in the construction industry and continuing revenue, visitors and vital spending.
"I'm confident that this agreement will serve Portlanders now and for years to come," Mayor Sam Adams said. "We will put construction workers back to work right away, and in the long‐term, MLS represents a smart investment in Portland's future success. Building on the Northwest's long‐standing soccer heritage, we can bring Portlanders together around another great sports team."
Oregon Finance Jobs
Despite the economic recession and all the trouble the finance industry has faced as of late, Oregon finance jobs still have a lot to offer.
During 2008, about $4.5 billion was paid to employees in Oregon's financial activities industry, which currently employs more than 88,000 workers, making up 5.2 percent of the state's overall employment.

- Rental and leasing services - 7,196 employees, average yearly salary of $27,693
- Securities, commodity contracts and investments - 4,864 employees, average yearly salary of $116,619
- Funds, trusts and other financial vehicles and monetary authorities - 613 employees, average yearly salary of $52,347
- Lessors of non-financial intangible assets - 335 employees, average yearly salary of $60,122

TempWorks, a company that provides financing and staffing software, recently announced that it created new relationships with 54 temporary staffing businesses during 2009. The company increased market-share by focusing its development energy on products that allow customers to increase market share, reduce overhead and improve profitability.
One of the company's most popular applications is the TempWorks Time-Card Linker, which enables staffing firms to display a digital image of scanned time cards with their corresponding transactions. This eliminates the need for the customer to collate paper time cards with printed invoices and saves about one man-hour per $10,000 of weekly billings.
RPO Company Partners with Australian Military
One of the biggest RPO (Click here) companies has secured the biggest recruitment outsourcing program in the world.
Manpower Inc recently announced that it has secured a $200 million contract to run the Australian military's recruiting program. Expanding on an earlier deal, the new contract will significantly increase Manpower's recruitment process outsourcing and its Australia operations.
The program for the Australian Defence Force is expected to begin in February and last 27 months. Manpower will provide the Australian military with recruitment functions, including everything from marketing and promotion to candidate screening and hiring.

Maine-based Northeast Technical Institute recently announced that it will soon offer a Green Energy Technician training program. The six-week program will provide graduates with the knowledge and certifications they need to succeed in a green career.
The program will give students an understanding of energy efficient gas, energy conservation methods and solar thermal installation. Students also will learn proven methods to reduce the consumption of oil and how to create new green plans for the future.
